svatý Jan Křtitel Na prádle
Czechia
The name is the first thing to explain, because it is not a pious one. Na Prádle means, roughly, at the laundry. This small Romanesque and Gothic church, tucked into the wedge where Říční and Všehrdova streets meet in the southern part of Malá Strana, close to the Čertovka channel and Kampa island, was closed and sold off in 1784 under the Josephine reforms. For years afterwards it earned its keep washing linen and cleaning carpets, and it also served as a warehouse. The nickname stuck long after the washtubs left. Today it is a parish church of the Czechoslovak Hussite Church and a protected cultural monument.
