svatý Jiljí
Czechia
Look up from the junction of Husova and Zlatá and the first thing you notice is that the two west towers do not match. Only the right-hand, southern tower was repaired in 1826, when it gained its pyramid roof; the left one was never finished. That lopsided silhouette is a scar from the fifteenth century. On 28 June 1432 lightning struck the roof, and a fire lasting four hours consumed all of it and melted the bells. What you see from the street is, in effect, a church that never quite got its full outline back.
