svatý Jiří

Czechia

You find the Church of St George on Hloubětínská street, in the Prague 14 district, and at first glance it reads as a tidy village church that has been absorbed by the city. It is a single-nave Gothic building reshaped by a long run of neo-Gothic alterations. It is still the main church of the Hloubětín parish, looked after by the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star, and it was declared a protected monument in 1964. Its origins are less certain than its address. Hloubětín first appears in a papal charter of 1207 confirming the village as a gift to the Teutonic Knights, who held it for only a quarter of a century. The church was most likely founded in those years, between 1207 and 1232. The evidence is the dedication itself, since St George was the Teutonic Knights' patron. The first building was Romanesque.
