svatý Kilián
Czechia
This is the only church in Bohemia dedicated to St Kilian, and the name is the first clue to why it stands here on the left bank of the Vltava at Davle. Kilian was an Irish-Scottish missionary who became bishop of Würzburg and died a martyr there. As a patron of the Benedictine order, he was given not only the Ostrov monastery near Davle, the second-oldest men's monastery in Bohemia, founded around 999, but also this church, built by the Benedictines on the bank facing it around 1160. When you stand by the walls, you are looking at the monks' foothold on the mainland.
