svatý Matěj

Czechia

Stand on the square in Bechyně and the church of St Matthias is turned towards you not with its entrance but with its chancel. The presbytery faces the square, and above its walls rises a richly modelled gable with a niche holding a wooden statue of St Matthias, carved around 1740. Behind it the square Renaissance tower takes over the skyline, the dominant feature of the whole square. This is the town's deanery church, Roman Catholic, listed as a cultural monument and part of the Bechyně urban conservation zone declared on 19 November 1990.
