svatý Matěj
Czechia
Stand at the gate of the churchyard and the ground falls away beneath you into the Šárka valley. Svatý Matěj is not a large church, but from this high spur in Dejvice it commands the whole of lower Šárka, its west tower and pyramid roof visible long before you arrive. The graves around you sit on far older ones. When archaeologists dug here at the end of the nineteenth century, the cemetery yielded furnaces for smelting bronze, cremation burials of the Knovíz culture, crouched skeletons from the Lusatian culture and finds from the Slavic period. People have been choosing this promontory for a very long time.
