svatý Václav

Czechia

Stand on náměstí Svatopluka Čecha in Prague's Vršovice and look up: a prism-shaped tower climbs 56 metres above the porch, its front face glazed with glass bricks, and at its summit a large cross of yellow opaxite that is lit at night. This is the Church of St Wenceslas, a three-aisled reinforced-concrete parish church designed by Josef Gočár and built in 1929–1930. The source describes its style as constructivist and, in the same breath, ranks it among the most successful functionalist church buildings in the country, so you may hear either label. With the nearby Church of St Nicholas, it is one of the two main churches of the Vršovice parish.
