Tržní kolonáda
Czechia
Everything about the Tržní kolonáda, the Market Colonnade, says it was never meant to last. It is wood, not stone: an open, richly carved structure in the Swiss style, standing on the left bank of the Teplá in Karlovy Vary. Wooden walls close it on three sides, and the front is a columned arcade you walk straight into from the street. It looks light enough to have been put up for a season, and in a sense it was. Yet it is now a protected cultural monument of the Czech Republic, and it still does exactly the job it was built for.
