U Bílého jednorožce
Czechia
Stand under the arcade at Old Town Square 15 and look up at the vaults over your head. These cross-ribbed vaults are dated to after 1330, which makes the covered walkway you are standing in older than almost everything else about the house above it. Before that, the site held a Romanesque building dated to around 1300 and two Gothic houses. What you see today, the house known both as U Bílého jednorožce, the White Unicorn, and as the Trčkovský dům, began as a Renaissance burgher's house and was reworked in a late Baroque manner in 1770. Its position does a great deal of the work: it is a prominent part of Old Town Square, of the block around the Týn church, and of the Royal Route.
