Uhrturm
Austria
Look up from the Hauptplatz and the clock is already looking back at you. The Uhrturm stands 73 metres above the square, at 424 metres, high on the south-western slope of the Schlossberg, the long north-south rock of dolomite that rises 123 metres over Graz. Four clock faces, each more than five metres across, and gilded hands make it the emblem of the Styrian capital. Read the time carefully, though: the larger hand shows the hours, not the minutes. When the clock was built, being able to read the hour correctly from a distance mattered more than anything finer.
