Velehradský klášter
Czechia
You arrive at the eastern foot of the Chřiby hills, in the village of Velehrad, about five kilometres from Staré Město near Uherské Hradiště. The monastery is named after Veligrad, the old village that is today Staré Město. Founded at the start of the 13th century, it is the oldest Cistercian monastery in Moravia. It is also counted as the most important place of pilgrimage in the Czech Republic, because of its link with the legacy of Saints Cyril and Methodius. The Cistercians are long gone. The complex now belongs to the Jesuits, who run the pilgrimage site and the parish from here, and part of it houses the Stojan grammar school. So the place you walk into is a working institution and a school, not a museum. The annual National Pilgrimage draws crowds that the source puts anywhere from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands.
