Villa Rustica

Slovakia

The signposts, such as they are, will call it Villa Rustica, but the name is a loose fit. The site's proper name is Veľká lúka, the Great Meadow, and what lies here is not a whole country estate but the stone footings of a single Roman-era building: a small private bathhouse, a balneum. It sits in woodland between Dúbravka and Devínska Nová Ves on the western edge of Bratislava, at about 210 metres above sea level, in a basin closed on three sides by spurs of the Little Carpathians. Archaeologists worked here from 1982 to 1993, and it counts as one of the significant finds of its type in the middle Danube region.
