Villa Tugendhat
Vila Tugendhat
Mies van der Rohe's 1930 masterwork, and a UNESCO site since 2001.
Villa Tugendhat is the house that put Brno on the map of modern architecture. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe drew it in 1928 for Grete and Fritz Tugendhat, and it was finished in 1930 — a functionalist statement built when functionalism was still an argument rather than a style. The plot and the money were a wedding present from Grete's father, the textile industrialist Alfred Löw-Beer. It became a national cultural monument in 1995 and entered the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2001.
