zámek Brandýs nad Labem

Czechia

You approach the castle at Brandýs nad Labem as travellers have for centuries: from the river. It stands on a raised terrace on the left bank of the Labe, and its reason for being there is the crossing below. In the early Middle Ages an important road ran from Prague northwards through Brandýs and Stará Boleslav, and the ford here was first given a guard post, then a fortified manor. Between 1468 and 1493 Jan Tovačovský z Cimburka moved the administrative centre of his estate here and rebuilt that manor into a castle. What you see today is that castle, reworked into a château and declared a national cultural monument in 2017.
