Zámek Lipová (ruin)
Czechia
Stand in the courtyard at Lipová and look up, and the first thing you notice is what is missing. The Baroque roofs and the timber trusses that held them have fallen in, and the sky shows through where ceilings should be. Yet the building around you is remarkably whole in its bones. Begun in 1736 or 1738, depending on which account you follow, the château in this border village in the Děčín district has never been substantially rebuilt. Apart from small alterations, what you see is the eighteenth-century house itself, damaged by neglect rather than disguised by later fashions. It is protected as a cultural monument and, at the same time, sits on the list of endangered ones.
