zámek Štiřín
Czechia
You reach Štiřín about 10 kilometres beyond the south-eastern edge of Prague, near Velké Popovice, in the village of Kamenice. Water sets the scene before the architecture does. Several sizeable ponds lie on the Kamenice brook and its tributaries, and the largest, Štiřínský rybník, spreads to the north of the château. The building itself is restrained: a single-storey-high Baroque house with three wings, its present form dating from a rebuild in 1750. It is easy to take in at a glance, which makes what happened inside it all the more surprising.
