Židovský hřbitov
Czechia
You come in from the west, through a wrought-iron gate, and the ground starts to climb almost at once. This is the Jewish cemetery of Třebíč, laid across the northern slope of the hill called Hrádek in the Podklášteří district, and it is among the largest Jewish cemeteries in the Czech Republic. The figures are worth holding in your head as you walk: 11,678 square metres, around 2,600 gravestones, and roughly 11,000 people buried here. The stones far outnumber what you can take in on one visit, and the people beneath them outnumber the stones several times over.
