Znaimertor
Austria
The Znaimertor is a gate set inside a tower, the Znaimerturm, and it was one of only two ways through the walls of Retz in Lower Austria. Its partner, the Nalbertor, stood in the Nalberturm. Both gates are thought to date from around 1300, when the town was founded and laid out to a plan right beside the older settlement of Retz-Altstadt. As you walk beneath the arch, you are following the line of a road that has passed through this exact point for centuries. The gate is now a protected monument.
